Six Months Later

Rachel and Ethan hosted a family dinner.

Patricia arrived early.

She noticed an old photograph of Thomas on a shelf.

She looked at it for a moment.

Then asked Rachel:

“Was that taken when you were little?”

Rachel smiled.

“Yeah. I was eight.”

Patricia picked up the frame carefully.

“You look exactly like him.”

Rachel had heard that hundreds of times.

But coming from Patricia, it felt different.

Their relationship didn’t become perfect.

Patricia still had opinions about almost everything.

Rachel still had stronger boundaries than Patricia preferred.

But whenever disagreements happened, Ethan reminded both of them about the chair.

Usually that ended the argument.

Not because Patricia had been completely wrong to feel uncomfortable.

And not because Rachel was the only person whose feelings mattered.

But because they had learned the difference between:

having an opinion

and

making someone else’s decision for them.
