The Ceremony Became More Emotional Than Expected

When Rachel walked down the aisle with her mother, she saw the chair.

Her father’s photograph was exactly where she had planned.

She almost lost her composure.

Then she noticed something else.

Patricia was seated directly behind it.

For the first several minutes, Patricia avoided looking at the photograph.

Eventually, though, she did.

Rachel couldn’t tell what she was thinking.

The ceremony continued.

Nobody complained.

Nobody said it was depressing.

Nobody left because an empty chair existed in the front row.

In fact, most guests barely mentioned it.

The huge problem Patricia had imagined never happened.

Then Came the Reception Toast

Rachel assumed everything was over.

It wasn’t.

During dinner, Ethan’s father gave a speech.

He welcomed Rachel to the family.

Then he raised his glass.

“To everyone who couldn’t be here with us today.”

Rachel smiled.

It was subtle.

Kind.

Then Patricia stood.

She hadn’t been scheduled to speak.

Again.

Ethan looked nervous.

Patricia picked up the microphone.

Rachel braced herself.

But Patricia surprised everyone.

She looked at Rachel.

Then said:

“I owe our bride an apology.”

The room became quiet.
