David Asked Everyone to Sit Down

Hannah refused.

She still held the dress.

David looked at Rebecca.

“Why would you do this?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Chloe’s wedding is six weeks away.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“She has no dress.”

“She has options.”

“Not this close.”

David shook his head.

“So you decided to give her Hannah’s?”

Rebecca answered:

“It’s a dress, David.”

Hannah visibly reacted.

David did too.

Rebecca immediately added:

“I know it has emotional value.”

David said:

“You clearly don’t.”

Rebecca Had Been Resentful for Years

The argument became bigger than the dress.

Rebecca finally admitted what had been bothering her.

Laura’s belongings were still everywhere.

Not literally.

But emotionally.

Photos in storage.

Holiday ornaments.

Recipes.

Stories.

Hannah constantly referencing:

“Mom used to…”

And David sometimes responding:

“Laura loved that too.”

Rebecca felt like she had married into a family where another woman would always have a permanent seat.

She told David:

“There are four people in this family, but sometimes it feels like there are five.”

Hannah’s anger shifted.

Not disappeared.

Shifted.

For the first time, she understood that this wasn’t really about Chloe needing a dress.

The dress was just where years of resentment had finally surfaced.
