Rachel Finally Told the Truth
Emily sent her sister one photograph.
The letter.
Rachel called within two minutes.
“Where did you get that?”
Emily didn’t answer the question.
“Where is Mom’s savings account?”
Silence.
“Rachel.”
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
No answer.
“How much was in it?”
Rachel started crying.
Emily hadn’t expected that.
For months, Emily had imagined Rachel as calculating and completely indifferent.
The reality was messier.
Rachel admitted that she had found the savings account shortly after their mother died.
There was enough money to cover the immediate house expenses.
But Rachel herself was in serious financial trouble.
Her husband had lost his job.
They had fallen behind on several payments.
She had used part of their mother’s savings.
At first, she intended to replace it.
Then more problems came.
Eventually, she convinced herself selling the house was the simplest way out.
She paid off the property expenses.
Covered some of her own debts.
And planned to send Emily money later.
But the longer she waited, the harder it became to admit what she had done.
Emily listened without interrupting.
When Rachel finished, there was a long silence.
Then Emily asked:
“How much is left?”
