Their Mother Had Expected This Argument
The first sentence made Emily laugh despite everything.
If you two are arguing while reading this, I am going to be extremely annoyed.
That sounded exactly like their mother.
Emily kept reading.
The letter explained that their mother had been worried about what would happen to the house after she died.
Rachel was practical.
Emily was sentimental.
Their mother knew they would likely disagree.
So she had made a decision.
The house could be sold.
But if either daughter wanted to keep it, she was supposed to be given the opportunity first.
And after expenses were paid, anything remaining was supposed to be divided equally.
There was more.
Their mother had also included information about a savings account that Emily had never known existed.
The account was intended specifically for property expenses after her death.
Taxes.
Repairs.
Utilities.
The exact costs Rachel had claimed forced her to sell the house quickly.
Emily read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
If that account still existed, Rachel’s explanation made no sense.
