Carol Said Ryan Was “Checking Something”

Megan looked at the open envelope.

There was cash inside.

Her expression changed.

“Give me that.”

Ryan held it out.

“Relax. I wasn’t taking anything.”

“Then why is it open?”

Carol stepped between them.

“He was checking the names.”

“For what?”

Carol hesitated.

Megan repeated:

“For what?”

Ryan looked toward his mother.

That was the first sign there was more going on.

Then Josh Arrived

Rachel had already texted him.

He came down the hallway quickly.

“What happened?”

Megan pointed toward the bag.

“Your mom took the wedding cards.”

Josh frowned.

Carol immediately responded:

“I moved them somewhere safe.”

Megan said:

“Ryan is opening them.”

Josh looked at his brother.

Ryan held up both hands.

“I was checking one envelope.”

“Why?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

Carol did.

“We needed to see whether Aunt Denise included the money she promised.”

Megan stared at her.

“What money?”

Carol sighed.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

Megan almost laughed.

“They are envelopes from MY wedding.”
