Her Mother-in-Law Threw Away the Dinner She Cooked—Then Her Husband Said, “Mom Was Just Trying to Help”
Rachel had spent two days preparing Thanksgiving dinner.
Not because anyone forced her to.
Because she wanted to.
It was the first Thanksgiving she and her husband, Eric, were hosting in their new home.
Fourteen people were coming.
Rachel had planned everything.
Turkey.
Mashed potatoes.
Stuffing.
Green bean casserole.
Mac and cheese.
Sweet potatoes.
Two pies.
Even homemade dinner rolls.
By Thursday morning, the kitchen smelled exactly how she wanted it to.
Eric came downstairs, looked around, and smiled.
“You really went all out.”
Rachel laughed.
“I want it to be good.”
“It already smells better than Mom’s.”
Rachel pointed a wooden spoon at him.
“Do not ever say that in front of her.”
They both laughed.
At the time, Rachel had no idea how important that joke would become.
His Mother Arrived Three Hours Early
At 11:20 a.m., the doorbell rang.
Rachel looked at the clock.
Guests weren’t supposed to arrive until 2:30.
Eric opened the door.
His mother, Diane, stood there holding two large grocery bags and a foil tray.
Behind her were three more containers.
Rachel walked toward the entryway.
“Hi, Diane. You’re early.”
Diane smiled.
“I figured you’d need help.”
Rachel glanced at the bags.
“We’re actually pretty much done.”
Diane walked past her into the kitchen.
“There’s always something to do.”
Rachel tried not to react.
This wasn’t unusual.
Diane had a habit of entering their house as though she still lived with Eric.
She rearranged things.
Opened cabinets.
Commented on groceries.
Once, she had replaced Rachel’s laundry detergent because she didn’t like the brand.
Eric usually laughed it off.
“That’s just Mom.”
Rachel had stopped finding it funny months ago.
