His Original Last Name Was Different

Before marrying Rebecca, Thomas had used the name Thomas Mercer.

Police began researching his past.

Twenty-two years earlier, Thomas Mercer had lived in western New York.

He worked for a small home-renovation company.

In 2004, one of his business partners disappeared.

The partner’s name was David Keller.

No one was ever charged.

The business dissolved several months later.

Thomas moved out of state.

Within two years, he started using his mother’s maiden name:

Morgan.

Police had never considered Thomas a suspect in Keller’s disappearance.

But the letters suddenly made investigators look at the old case again.

David Keller Had a Son

His name was Evan Keller.

He had been nine years old when his father disappeared.

Now he was thirty-one.

Investigators located him living approximately forty miles from Brookhaven.

He worked as an insurance claims adjuster.

When detectives questioned Evan, he admitted knowing where Thomas lived.

He also admitted sending some of the letters.

“Why?”

“I wanted him to admit what happened to my father.”

“Did you go to the Morgan house Tuesday night?”

Evan said no.

“What about the SUV?”

He owned a dark SUV.

That looked bad.

But his vehicle had automatic location tracking.

Records showed it parked outside his apartment during the disappearance.

Evan had sent the letters.

But apparently he wasn’t the person driving past the house.
